The Last Samurai is a 2003 American epic war film directed and co-produced by Edward Zwick, who also co-wrote the screenplay with John Logan. The film stars Tom Cruise, who also co-produced, as well as Ken Watanabe, Shin Koyamada.
Tom Cruise portrays a formerly retired officer of the United States 7th Cavalry Regiment, whose personal and emotional conflicts bring him into contact with samurai warriors in the wake of the Meji Restoration in 19th Century Japan.

Beyond Borders is a 2003 romantic-drama film about aid workers, directed by Martin Campell and starring Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen. The original music score was composed by James Horner.
Plot: While attending a fund-raising gala, Sarah Jordan (A. Jolie), a naive, married American socialite living in England, witnesses a fiery plea delivered by an intruder – a renegade humanitarian, Dr. Nick Callahan (C. Owen). His plea made on behalf of impoverished children under his care turns Sarah’s life upside down. Attracted to Nick and his cause, she impulsively abandons her job at an art gallery and sheltered life in England to work alongside him in his effort to aid the refugee camps. She travels to Ethiopia.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a 2006 Irish war drama film directed by Ken Loach, set during the Irish War of Indipendence (1919–1922) and the Irish civil war (1922–1923). Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, this drama tells the fictional story of two County Cork brothers, Damien O’Donovan (Cillian Murphy) and Teddy O’Donovan (Pàdric Delaney), who join the Irish Republic Army to fight for Irish independence from the United kingdom. It takes its title from the Robert Dwyer Joyce song “The Wind that shakes the barley” a song set during the 1798 rebellion in Ireland and featured early in the film.

Gran Torino is a 2008 American drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also starred in the film. The film co-stars C. Carley, B. Vang and A. Her. Gran Torino opened via a limited theatrical release in North America on December 12, 2008, and later to a worldwide release on January 9, 2009.[4] Set in Detroit. Michigan, it is the first mainstream American film to feature Hmong Americans. Many Lao Hmong war refugees resettled in the U.S. following the communist takeover of Laos in 1975.
The story follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean war veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world. Walt’s young neighbor, Thao Vanglor, is pressured by his cousin into stealing Walt’s prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft with his M1 Garand rifle and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family.

Themes of fate, conscience, and circumstance re-emerge that the Coen brothers have previously explored in Blood Simple and Fargo.
